Heritage Poultry

Heritage Breed Chickens are like the purebred dog or cat of the chicken world. They have been around for a long time (typically the beginning of the 20th century or older), are non-hybrid, genetically stable, naturally-mating, and outdoor-hardy breeds that have proven themselves as sustainable, healthy, valuable birds for generations.

These birds are more likely to become broody, as their mothering instincts have not been bred out of them. They will breed true, meaning their babies will share the same genetic make up (characteristics) they do. They are more likely to be winter-hearty and excellent foragers.

Orpingtons

Orpington chickens are a wonderful, gentle bird perfect for the homestead. These friendly foul even enjoy being handled by their humans. No attention is bad attention. Sought after for their eggs as well as meat, they are a perfect dual purpose bird. They also make wonderful mothers, often going broody on a clutch of their eggs. They have also been known to steal newly hatched chicks from unwatchful mothers of other breeds.

Ameraucanas

Ameraucana chickens are a winter hearty bird. They are primarily an egg laying bird, prized for their light blue eggs. They will lay approximately 4-5 eggs per week. They are known to wait a little longer than some birds to begin laying, however.
The Ameraucanas have a hawk-like appearance with red eyes, and a beard, making them more predator resistant than some other breeds. Ameraucanas are known for being fantastic foragers, and quite friendly with their human counter parts. These easy-keepers are a wonderful addition to any homestead looking to raise farm fresh eggs.
Pekin Ducks

Pekin ducks are awesome! We love watching them play in the water, be it a pool or a large puddle they discover after it rains, they also love to forage and search the property for tasty little treats. They are a lot of fun to have around,
Pekin ducks are generally considered a meat breed of duck as they grow very fast and get large quick, but what we really love about them is their eggs. they lay beautiful jumbo sized eggs that are just amazing. Duck eggs are a bit larger than large-sized chicken eggs. They’re also an excellent source of protein, fat, and a wide range of vitamins and minerals.
